Helmet That alerts your one's

The Techmet, a helmet that will inform the wearer's family as well as the emergency services in case the former is involved in an
accident and also give the location of the mishap site, is one of the products made by the students of Indian Instiute of Technology-Madras to be showcased at Shaastra. The 11th edition of the institute's technical festival, to be flagged off on Wednesday, will focus on sustainable development.

Shaastra 2009 aims at showcasing the sustainability of the projects. Participants in the SOS Cycle project can use the cycle as a means of transport rather than the bus inside the institute. SOS Energy will see the various hostels vying with one another for a month to save as much energy as possible to offset the extra use of electricity during the event, while SOS Recycle will attempt to make Shaastra a zero-waste festival. There will be an energy audit done during the four-day event.

A symposium has also been planned to formulate practical and feasible solutions to tackle sustainability, energy, urbalisation and financial issues. Speakers include urban strategy magaer of World Bank Abha Joshi Ghani, chairman of the Centre for Policy Research K C Sivaramakrishnan and associate director of Teri Akansha Chaurey.

The festival will also feature a summit where aspiring entrepreneurs get a chance to interact with founders of start-ups. Other highlights include an air show, a choreographed and professional aerobatics show by technical artistes and their extreme machines; spirit of engineering projects including a process to create a eco-friendly fuel from algae called Algiesel and Touch Talk, which aims to provide a fast and easy way of communication for the speech-impaired. A laser show and Shaastra Car, where students will assemble a car from scratch, are also events to look forward to.

This year's event seeks to involve everyone, from budding engineers to young entrepreneurs and future policy makers to technocrats.

Google's Real Time Search Option Found

If you are a Twitter user, you might be aware of the buggy but extremely useful "real time search" that helps you keep tab of events by the second. Ever wondered how it would be if Google offered this option? Now, if you perform a Google search, you already get detailed options to customize your search to display results that were quite recent. It was in May that Google enhanced this "time frame limited" search options. However, even with these options, the search was hardly real time - partly because the search option only had the option to display results from Any time, Past year, Past week, Recent results and Past 24 hours. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, even "Past 24 hours" ain't real time in today's era of Twitter and real time updates. So, if there were some of you who were actually looking forward to Google offering real time search results, guess what? Google actually HAS an option to search real-time. It's just that they aren't telling you this.

Google PageRank trick could just save the world

Scientists using web analytics to track complex ecosystems

To its long list of achievements we may now be able to add the one crowning glory many think Google has long lusted after - the secret of how to save the planet.

In a roundabout way, that's one possible outcome of applying Google's PageRank web algorithm to analyse how natural ecosystems are connected internally.

Who are you eating?

Scientists writing in the latest issue of industry journal PLoS Computational Biology say the same PageRank techniques used to analyse how 'important' websites are can be used to ascertain the role of individual organisms in an ecosystem.

This analysis of food webs - who eats whom, basically - can shed light on what might happen should one part of an ecosystem be damaged or destroyed.

Practical applications

So, for example, pollution destroying one kind of marine organism might give rise to wide scale algal blooms that could influence global warming or have other adverse effects. Understanding such relationships will, clearly, be crucial in avoiding damage to them.

So far, the work with PageRank has been well received by the specialists. WWF-UK director Dr Glyn Davies said: "Any research that strengthens our understanding of the complex web of ecological processes that bind us all is welcome."

Now, if only the guys in white coats can do something about junk email then we'll be really happy.

F.E.A.R 2

The original game came out of nowhere and claimed its position among the top horror games of all time. It had a touch of brilliance in all aspects of design and presentation. I still remember the first teaser of FEAR; it was spooky but entertaining and laid the foundation for FEAR's success. The game was released amid much hype but delivered on almost all levels, creating a memorable character in Alma. There were two expansion packs in between, but they deliver the same experience, hence the highly anticipated F.E.A.R 2 is on our list at number 10.

Lenovo, Samsung Stall Netbooks

Lenovo had announced Ideapad s12 featuring Nvidia ION platform back in May and till now, there isn't any sight of it. Everybody is excited about this netbook because it was supposed to be the first netbook with HD capacities (thanks to Nvidia ION) to hit the markets. And now, Gizmodo reports that Lenovo has pushed the availability of IdeaPad S12 netbook till Microsoft Windows 7 is launched.
Lenovo IdeaPad 12 has a 12-inch WXGA (1280x800) display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor with Intel integrated GMA 950 graphics paired with NVDIA ION platform. Since Lenovo has delayed availability of IdeaPad S12 netbook, Samsung has taken up opportunity and will release its N510 too has Nvidia ION inside.

However, Samsung N510 with Nvidia GeForce 9400M chip packs more graphic muscle than IdeaPad S12. Yes, it's the same chip packed in Apple's Unibody MacBookpros. This netbook was expected to hit U.S. markets for $599 (Rs. 28,800 approx.) next month. But LaptopMag reports that the availability of the N510 netbook has been delayed till the launch of Windows 7 according to a Samsung representative.
